Most iPhones in Cherng Talay don't break. They wear out.
Cherng Talay is where people live rather than holiday — the village, the housing around the Laguna complex, the long stretch inland from Bang Tao. The phones that come to us from here are rarely dramatic. They are three, four, five years old, they have quietly stopped holding a charge, the cable only works at an angle, and their owner has been putting up with it for months. That is a very fixable problem, and usually a cheap one.
The battery is almost always the answer
If one repair fixes more ageing iPhones than anything else, it is the battery — and if one climate is hard on batteries, it is this one. Lithium-ion cells age with heat, and Phuket does not give them the cool nights that a European winter does. Layer on the local realities — a phone clamped to a scooter mount in direct sun, an afternoon face-up on a car dashboard, a nightly charge in a bedroom that never really cools down — and a cell that might have lasted three years somewhere temperate is visibly tired in two.
The symptoms are consistent enough that most people diagnose themselves before they arrive. The phone shuts down at 25 or 30% and insists it is empty. It drops fifteen percent in a single step. It has become inexplicably sluggish since an iOS update, which is usually not the update at all but iOS quietly throttling the processor to stop a worn cell from browning out. And in Settings, Battery Health has slid down towards 80%, where iOS starts saying "Service".
A battery takes 20–40 minutes on the bench, and we tell you exactly what it costs for your model before the phone is opened. On a phone that is otherwise sound, it is the best money you can spend on it — two more usable years for a fraction of what replacing a handset costs in Thailand.
The charging port: often cheaper than you fear
The second most common thing we see from long-stay residents is a phone that has to be charged at exactly the right angle, or propped against something, or wiggled until the little lightning bolt appears. Almost everyone assumes this means a broken port and an expensive repair.
Usually it does not. The most common cause is years of pocket lint, dust and fine sand compacted into a solid plug at the bottom of the port, so the connector physically cannot seat all the way in. Under magnification, that comes out — and the phone charges properly again for the first time in a year, without any part being replaced. A clean is the cheap end of the charging-port job; a genuinely worn-out port that has to be replaced is the dearer end. You are told which one it is, and what it costs, before anything happens. We check the cheap explanation first, because it would be an easy and dishonest thing to skip.
What each job takes, and why it fails here
| Repair | Typical time | Why it goes on an ageing Phuket phone |
|---|---|---|
| Battery replacement | 20–40 minutes | Heat: scooter mounts, car dashboards, bedrooms that never cool down |
| Charging port clean or replacement | 30–60 minutes | Years of compacted pocket lint, dust and fine sand |
| Screen replacement | 30–60 minutes | One drop, on a phone that has already had a long life |
| Liquid damage board work | Usually 1–3 days | Humidity and corrosion, often surfacing long after the spill |
| Data recovery | Quoted after diagnosis | The phone is finished, but the storage chip usually is not |
Every repair is inspected first, then written down as a single fixed price before we start — and if that number is not worth it to you, you pay nothing and take the phone home. Every screen, battery and port job carries a 90-day warranty on parts and workmanship. Liquid and board work carries a 30-day diagnostic warranty.
Repair it, or let it go?
Three questions worth asking before you spend anything
- How many faults does it actually have? One fault on a healthy phone is nearly always worth fixing. Three faults, or any history of liquid on the board, and you are buying time rather than a phone — and we will tell you that instead of quoting for all three.
- Is the board healthy? A worn battery, a lint-packed port and a cracked screen are all consumable parts. Corrosion on the logic board is not. We can see the difference in ten minutes on the bench, and it is the single most useful thing to know before deciding.
- What is the phone for next? A device you will hand down, keep as a spare, or sell on is worth more with a fresh battery and a clean screen than with neither. A phone with 64GB of storage that is permanently full will feel slow whatever we replace — that is not a repair problem.
Parts: the honest version
We fit two grades. Premium OEM parts are the value choice and are what most residents pick. Genuine Apple parts cost more and avoid one specific annoyance: on recent iPhones, iOS may display an "Unknown Part" or service notice in Settings after a non-genuine battery or screen is fitted, and battery health reporting can become unavailable. It does not change how the phone works day to day, but you should know before you choose rather than discover it afterwards. We tell you which grade is going in, and what the difference costs, before the phone is opened.
One trip, not two
The workshop is in Patong, roughly 25–35 minutes from Cherng Talay — down the coast road through Kamala and over Patong Hill, or inland via the bypass depending on the time of day. That is far enough that we do not want you making the drive on spec. Message us the exact model and the fault before you set off; if it is a part we would need to order, we will tell you, get it in, and give you a day. Screens and batteries are typically finished in 30–60 minutes while you wait.
