Before you spend ฿800–฿3,000 on a repair you might not need: roughly 40% of iPhones brought to us as "completely dead" turn out to have a drained battery or a software crash — both of which cost nothing to fix. This guide walks through the same diagnostic process we use in the shop, in order of likelihood.

From our workshop data (2023–2025): Of iPhones brought in as "won't turn on," 24% needed only charging, 16% fixed with a force restart, 22% needed battery replacement, 18% had a faulty screen (phone was working), and 20% had hardware failure requiring paid repair. That means 62% of visits had a fix under ฿1,200.

Why iPhones "Die" in Phuket More Often Than Back Home

Phuket's climate creates conditions that accelerate iPhone failure. Average humidity sits at 80–90% year-round, sea salt is airborne even kilometres from the beach, and ambient temperatures regularly exceed 32°C — pushing phone temperatures toward the 45°C thermal shutdown threshold when left in the sun or in a hot vehicle.

We also see a pattern with tourists: phones that worked perfectly in Europe or Australia suddenly go dark after a beach day. The culprit is usually one of three things — a battery that was already borderline gets pushed over the edge by heat, moisture ingress from sweating or water splashes triggers a short, or a phone dropped on a hard surface causes an internal connector to unseat. None of these are automatically expensive to fix.

The 6 Steps: Work Through These Before Visiting a Shop

Do these in order. Most people skip to step 2 or 3 without properly ruling out step 1.

1

Charge for 20+ minutes with a wall adapter

This is the most frequently skipped step. A battery depleted below 1% goes into a "protection mode" that prevents it from accepting a charge for the first few minutes. Plug into a wall adapter — not a laptop USB port (too little current), not a wireless charger (too slow) — and wait a full 20 minutes before attempting to turn on.

If you see the red battery icon with a lightning bolt: this is your fix. If the screen shows nothing at all after 45 minutes, the cable or adapter may be faulty — try a second one if available.

Success rate for this step: ~24% of dead iPhone visits
2

Force restart (the correct sequence for your model)

iOS can crash in a way that freezes the phone completely. A force restart bypasses the normal shutdown process and reboots the processor directly. The sequence is model-specific:

  • iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16: Press & release Volume Up → Press & release Volume Down → Hold Side button until Apple logo appears (≤10 seconds)
  • iPhone 7 / 7 Plus: Hold Volume Down + Sleep/Wake simultaneously for 10 seconds
  • iPhone 6s, SE (1st gen), and earlier: Hold Home + Sleep/Wake simultaneously for 10 seconds

If the screen flickers or you feel a vibration, keep holding — the Apple logo may take a moment to appear.

Success rate for this step: ~16% of dead iPhone visits
3

Check for overheating

iPhones shut down automatically when the battery temperature exceeds 45°C — this is a safety feature, not a fault. The phone will refuse to turn on until it cools. In Phuket this happens more frequently than anywhere else we've worked:

  • Phones left on sunloungers in direct sun can reach internal temps of 50°C+ within 10 minutes
  • Cars parked in the sun reach 60–70°C inside — never leave your phone in a parked car
  • Using maps/GPS intensively while the phone is in direct sun

Fix: Move to air-conditioning. Wait 15–20 minutes without plugging in. Then try to power on.

4

Listen and feel — does the phone have any signs of life?

Before assuming hardware failure, check for subtle signs that the phone is actually running:

  • Notifications sound or vibrate — phone is working, screen has failed
  • Screen shows faint image in bright light — backlight failed, display itself may be fine
  • Gets warm while charging — battery is accepting a charge, software crash more likely
  • Completely cold and silent — more likely hardware fault

If you can hear notifications but the screen is black, your data is safe and intact — screen replacement (฿1,200–฿3,800) is your only likely repair.

5

Check the Liquid Contact Indicator

Every iPhone has a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) — a small sensor in the SIM card tray slot that turns red or pink if moisture entered the device. Use a torch and look inside the SIM slot with the tray removed.

White/silver = dry. Pink or red = moisture detected.

If your LCI has triggered: do not charge the phone. Charging a water-damaged iPhone causes ongoing corrosion and can cause short circuits. Get it to a repair shop for ultrasonic cleaning within 24–48 hours. Our recovery rate is 95% for fresh-water damage treated within one hour.

6

Try Recovery Mode via a computer

If steps 1–5 haven't resolved the issue and you have access to a laptop or computer, iOS Recovery Mode can fix corrupted operating systems without hardware repair. Connect your iPhone to the computer and open iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac with Catalina or newer), then:

  1. Perform the force restart sequence (Step 2) while the phone is connected
  2. When iTunes/Finder detects a device in Recovery Mode, click "Restore"
  3. This reinstalls iOS — you'll need to restore from a backup afterward

Note: a Restore erases the phone. Only do this if you have an iCloud or iTunes backup, or you're comfortable losing data to save on repair costs.

What Happens in the Shop: The Professional Diagnostic

If all six steps fail, you're likely dealing with a hardware fault. Here's what a proper diagnostic looks like — and what you should expect at a reputable shop:

Diagnostic Step What It Checks Likely Fault Repair Cost
DC Power Supply test Does board draw current? Short circuit / PMIC fault ฿2,000–฿5,000
Battery voltage test Is battery above 3.0V? Dead cell in battery ฿800–฿1,400
Screen connector test Is screen getting signal? Cracked screen / broken flex ฿1,200–฿3,800
Charging circuit test Is charge entering the board? Tristar/Hydra IC chip fault ฿1,500–฿3,500
Boot sequence analysis Does CPU attempt to start? NAND / CPU-level fault ฿3,000–฿6,000+

A full diagnostic takes 15–30 minutes and should be free of charge at any reputable shop. The technician will tell you what they found, what needs replacing, and give you a quote before touching anything. If a shop wants to charge you a diagnostic fee before telling you what's wrong, leave.

Dead Battery vs. Dead Phone: How to Tell the Difference

The single most common mistake tourists make is assuming "dead phone" means hardware failure. Here's how the two present differently:

Likely just a dead battery

  • Died suddenly with no warning
  • Had been in the sun / car
  • iPhone was over 2 years old
  • Battery percentage was unreliable recently
  • Phone gets warm on the charger

Likely hardware fault

  • Dropped from significant height
  • Got wet then refused to start
  • Failed during an iOS update
  • Force restart has no effect at all
  • Does not get warm on the charger

Should You Repair or Replace?

This depends on the fault, the model, and the repair cost as a proportion of replacement value. Here's our general guidance:

Our rule of thumb: if repair costs exceed 40% of the value of an equivalent used phone in working condition, replacement is usually better value.

Frequently Asked Questions

This almost always means the phone is working but the screen has failed. The LCD/OLED panel or its flex cable connector has a fault. You may still be able to back up data via iTunes if you can unlock it blind. Screen replacement typically costs ฿1,200–฿3,800 depending on your iPhone model — and your data will be completely intact.

Wait at least 20–30 minutes with a genuine Apple cable and a wall adapter (not a laptop USB port). Extremely depleted batteries need time to accept a charge before the phone can boot. If you see nothing after 45 minutes, try a different cable — faulty cables account for roughly 15% of "dead phone" visits we receive.

Yes. iPhones will shut down and refuse to turn on when the battery temperature exceeds 45°C. This is a safety mechanism, not a fault. Phones left on sunloungers, in hot cars, or in direct beach sun can easily hit this threshold in Phuket's climate. Move to air-conditioning and wait 15–20 minutes before trying to power on.

No — do not charge it. Seawater is highly conductive and causes ongoing corrosion inside the device. Charging accelerates this damage and can cause a short circuit. Remove the SIM tray to allow airflow and get to a repair shop within 24 hours for ultrasonic cleaning. Our recovery rate for sea water damage treated within one hour is 80%.

A diagnostic at a reputable independent shop should be free — typically 15–30 minutes. The technician will use a DC power supply to test whether the board draws current, check the charging circuit, and assess the screen connector. Be cautious of shops that charge a diagnostic fee upfront without explaining what they're testing.

Usually yes, depending on the fault. A battery replacement (฿800–฿1,200) or screen repair (฿1,200–฿2,200 for older models) costs a fraction of a replacement. We recommend repair if the cost is under 40% of a comparable used phone value. For a 4-year-old iPhone 12, most repairs will clear that threshold easily.

Sometimes — it depends on the fault. If the issue is a failed screen, data is fully accessible after screen replacement. If the battery has completely failed, data is intact and recoverable once the battery is replaced. Motherboard-level faults are harder — chip-level repair costs ฿2,000–฿6,000. If you have an iCloud or iTunes backup, data recovery is a non-issue. See our full data recovery service page for more detail.
